🎣 The $100 Tip That Made Headlines
A few years ago, a struggling waitress received a $100 tip on a $10 meal. The customer left a note: “I’ve been blessed. Now I’m blessing you.” The story went viral—not because of the dollar amount—but because of the spirit behind it.
Generosity from wealth is admired.
But generosity from lack? That’s divine.
That’s what Jesus sees here in Mark 12.
📜 HISTORICAL + LINGUISTIC CONTEXT
Jesus is no longer answering riddles or silencing critics.
He’s watching.
“He sat down opposite the treasury and watched…” (v. 41)
This was the Court of the Women, where 13 trumpet-shaped receptacles lined the wall. Wealthy donors made a show of giving, often by pouring coins that clanged and echoed.
Then comes a widow.
No fanfare. No sound. No audience.
Just two lepta—the smallest coin in Jewish currency.
Together they amounted to 1/64th of a denarius—roughly six minutes of a day’s wage.
Worthless in the market.
But priceless in the kingdom.
Jesus sees her bios—her whole life (v. 44).
