🎣A Standing Ovation for an Empty Act
Years ago, I watched a man give a stirring speech at a large event. He quoted Scripture, shared heartfelt stories, and had the crowd on their feet. It was impressive. Later, someone leaned over and whispered, “He doesn’t believe any of that.”
Turns out, he knew how to move people—but he didn’t know the God he spoke of.
That’s the kind of spiritual performance Jesus warns us about.
📜 HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The scribes in first-century Israel were experts in the Law of Moses—teachers, legal scholars, interpreters of Scripture. They wore long flowing robes called tallit, symbols of honor and prestige. People revered them as holy men.
But Jesus sees through the glitter and gold.
“Beware of the scribes…” (Mark 12:38)
Not admire. Not imitate. Beware.
Why? Because behind the costume was corruption:
- They loved attention (v. 38)
- They craved status (v. 39)
- They exploited the vulnerable (v. 40)
And while their lips prayed long, their hearts were far from God.
Thomas Watson, the great Puritan preacher, warned:
“The hypocrite is known by the outward show of holiness, not the inward power.”
Their “ministry” was more about being seen than serving.
Their long prayers were not devotion but performance.
Jesus wasn’t fooled. And He tells us—don’t be fooled either.

“Are you more concerned with how others see you… or how God sees you?”
We live in a world that rewards visibility—likes, shares, applause. But the kingdom of God rewards faithfulness in secret.
Jesus said:
“When you give… do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” – Matthew 6:3
In other words: Do it quietly. Do it humbly. Do it for Him.
Modern preacher Voddie Baucham put it plainly:
“We are not called to be famous. We are called to be faithful.”

- Do I worship only when people are watching—or when no one is?
