Mark 15:39

“Truly this man was the Son of God.”

The Gospel of Mark begins with a bold declaration:

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” (Mark 1:1)

From that point forward, the story asks a question:

Who will recognize this truth?

Crowds witness miracles but misunderstand Jesus.

Religious leaders oppose Him.

Even the disciples struggle to grasp His mission.

Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ in Mark 8:29 but quickly rebukes Him for predicting His death.

The only ones that got it…the demons

No one fully understands.

Until the cross.

Standing at the foot of Golgotha is a Roman centurion.

A hardened military officer who had likely supervised many crucifixions.

But something about Jesus’ death is different.

Mark tells us the centurion saw how Jesus breathed His last.

Instead of fading slowly in weakness, Jesus cried out loudly and gave up His spirit.

John records Jesus’ words:

“It is finished.” (John 19:30)

This was not the defeat of a victim.

It was the completed mission of the Son of God.

The centurion sees it.

And he declares:

“Truly this man was the Son of God.”

Charles Spurgeon once said:

“The cross itself was the pulpit from which the centurion learned the gospel.”

The irony is striking.

Religious leaders mock.

Disciples flee.

But a Gentile soldier recognizes the truth.

The cross reveals what miracles alone could not.

Lord Jesus, open my eyes to see the truth revealed at the cross. Help me confess You boldly as the Son of God.
