? Historical Context
After silencing the Pharisees and Herodians (vv. 13–17), Jesus is approached by a different group: the Sadducees, a wealthy, politically powerful sect of Judaism. Unlike the Pharisees, the Sadducees rejected belief in angels, spirits, and the resurrection (Acts 23:8), holding only to the Torah (Genesis–Deuteronomy) as authoritative.
Their question to Jesus is intentionally absurd—a made-up scenario involving a woman who marries seven brothers (a reference to levirate marriage from Deuteronomy 25:5–10) meant to expose resurrection as illogical or laughable.
But Jesus isn’t laughing.
He delivers a stinging rebuke: “You don’t know Scripture or God’s power.” It’s a bold confrontation not only of theological ignorance but spiritual blindness.
