“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” – 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NKJV)
Reflection:
When we read 2 Corinthians 3:18, it’s easy to feel like Paul is speaking in extravagant language or even using metaphors that seem too lofty to comprehend fully. But as we pause and reflect, we realize that Paul means exactly what he is saying. The language here isn’t just beautiful; it is profound, real, and foundational to our spiritual journey.
In this verse, Paul describes a process that every believer undergoes, and that process is nothing less than a spiritual metamorphosis. The “veil” mentioned here refers to the veil that kept God’s glory hidden from the Israelites in the Old Testament. Now, through Christ, that veil is removed, and we are able to behold the glory of the Lord. What’s more, Paul says we are being transformed into His image, moving from one stage of glory to another, all through the work of the Holy Spirit.
This transformation isn’t a one-time event. It is an ongoing process—like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly, a continual work of God’s grace. Our lives are marked by this process of growing more and more into the likeness of Christ. It’s not something we can achieve by our own effort, but it’s done by the Spirit of the Lord.
Application:
When we think about transformation, it’s easy to focus on outward appearances, on habits or behaviors that need changing. While that may be a part of it, Paul emphasizes that this transformation is deeper—it’s about the heart and the spirit. It’s about reflecting the glory of Christ. How can we live out this truth daily?
- Behold His Glory: We can’t reflect what we don’t behold. If we want to be transformed, we must spend time in God’s presence—through prayer, reading His Word, and worshiping Him. The more we behold His glory, the more we are changed.
- Cooperate with the Spirit: The transformation is “just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” The Holy Spirit is actively at work in us. We need to yield to His guidance, allowing Him to shape us and lead us toward greater Christlikeness. This isn’t a passive process; it requires our cooperation and willingness to be transformed.
- Trust the Process: It can be easy to get discouraged when we don’t see immediate change. However, Paul reminds us that this transformation happens “from glory to glory.” God is patient with us. We must trust that He is at work, even when we can’t see all the results yet.
- Reflect His Image: As we are transformed, we become more like Christ. This transformation isn’t just for our benefit but also for the world around us. We are called to be reflections of His glory to those who don’t yet know Him.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible gift of transformation that comes through the work of Your Holy Spirit. We confess that sometimes we try to change on our own, forgetting that true change comes only through beholding Your glory and yielding to the Spirit. Help us to spend more time in Your presence, reflecting Your love, Your grace, and Your holiness. Lord, we trust You with our spiritual growth, knowing that it’s Your desire to make us more like Christ each day.
