Don’t Chase Sensations — Cling to Christ’s Word
“If anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it.” — Mark 13:21
Don’t Be Fooled by Flashy Messiahs
During the fall of Jerusalem, chaos reigned. The city was surrounded, starving, and burning. In that panic, false messiahs multiplied. Josephus tells us in War 2.13.4 that many self-proclaimed prophets promised deliverance. Some led groups into the wilderness. Others lured people into the Temple promising miracles — only to be slaughtered.
People wanted hope, and they followed signs instead of Scripture.
Jesus warned them beforehand: “Don’t believe it.” Not every voice promising rescue is from heaven. Not every miracle proves truth.
Greg Bahnsen put it simply:
“The power of deception lies in forgetting what Christ has already said.”
Truth Anchors Us in Tribulation
This warning wasn’t for pagans. It was for disciples.
Jesus knows His people are vulnerable to deception in desperation. And false teachers know how to twist expectations into lies.
The antidote is not more signs. It’s not more emotion. It’s faithful memory — remembering what Jesus already said.
As Paul wrote: “Let no one deceive you in any way” (2 Thess. 2:3).
And John reminds us: “Test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1).
The Christians who survived AD 70 didn’t follow false Christs. They followed the true Christ by obeying His Word. They fled, endured, and were spared.
Application: Stay Grounded in the Word
Our world isn’t short on spiritual voices. YouTube prophets. Social media mystics. Sensational headlines dressed up in Bible verses. But the real Christ doesn’t need marketing campaigns. He already spoke, and His sheep know His voice (John 10:27).
Know your Bible.
False messiahs thrive where Scripture is ignored.
Trust His warnings.
They’re not cruel — they’re merciful.
Stay alert.
Satan doesn’t only use persecution — he uses imitation.
Thomas Watson wrote:
“Satan tempts more by error than by evil… he comes not with a sword but a lie.”
The Gospel is the Ultimate Warning — and the Greatest Mercy
Jerusalem’s fall wasn’t fiction. It was blood, fire, and stone.
- Mothers starved.
- Families betrayed one another.
- The Temple burned.
- Over a million perished.
- But not one Christian died. Why? They believed Jesus. They obeyed His Word. And they lived.
But that judgment was only a shadow.
Another day is coming — not just on a city, but on the whole world.
“It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” — Hebrews 9:27
We are no better than Jerusalem.
We too have broken God’s law.
We too have rejected His Son.
And we too deserve judgment.
But here’s the good news:
- Jesus lived the righteous life we failed to live.
- He died on the cross, bearing wrath we deserved.
- He rose on the third day, crushing sin and death.
- Now He offers mercy — not fire. Life — not death.
Come to Him. Now.
Where the Jews once cried, “His blood be on us and our children,”
— you can cry: “His blood cover me in mercy.”
Athanasius said:
“He became what we are, that He might make us what He is.”
