🍷“The Stain that Wouldn’t Wash Out”
When I was a child, I spilled a bottle of red ink on my church clothes. No matter how many times my mother tried to scrub it out, the stain remained—faint but permanent. She’d shake her head and say, “Some stains only come out with blood.”
We don’t like to talk about blood. But the gospel won’t let us avoid it.
Because sin is a stain that no earthly detergent can cleanse.
And that’s why Jesus held up the cup and said:
“This cup is the new covenant in My blood…” – Luke 22:20
The blood of Jesus is not just a symbol of suffering—it’s the source of cleansing, covenant, and peace.
🩸 1. The Necessity of Blood
“Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins.” – Hebrews 9:22
This isn’t just a New Testament truth—it’s rooted in the sacrificial system of the Old Testament.
Every lamb, every altar, every drop pointed forward to the Lamb of God.

“There is no gospel without blood. All our hopes lie crushed without it.”
But this blood didn’t just drip down Golgotha’s hill—it ran through the veins of a New Covenant.
✝️ 2. What the Blood Does
Peter told us the body bore our sins. But Paul, John, and the author of Hebrews tell us what the blood accomplished:
📖 It CLEANS – “The blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin.” – 1 John 1:7
📖 It REDEEMS – “In Him we have redemption through His blood…” – Eph. 1:7
📖 It JUSTIFIES – “…God put [Christ] forward… to be received by faith in His blood.” – Rom. 3:25
📖 It SEALS the COVENANT – “This is My blood of the covenant…” – Matt. 26:28
🗣️ R.C. Sproul said:
“God doesn’t sweep sin under the rug—He pours wrath on it, and blood is the only satisfaction.”
The cup reminds us: Grace isn’t cheap. It was bought with blood.
🧠Application: Drink and Remember
- The blood satisfies justice.
- Your sin deserves wrath. The blood took the hit. Drink with reverent gratitude.
- “The body took your place. The blood took your punishment.”
- The blood invites you in.
- The new covenant isn’t earned—it’s sealed with blood.
- You don’t sign the contract—Jesus signed it with His life.
- The blood purifies your conscience.
- “How much more will the blood of Christ… purify our conscience…” – Heb. 9:14
- Don’t live stained when the blood has washed you clean.

“This cup…”
It’s not just wine. It’s a witness. A visible reminder that justice has been satisfied and mercy has been poured.
“Jesus, thank You for not only bearing my guilt, but for blotting it out with Your blood.
Where my conscience condemned, Your blood now speaks.
Where wrath once waited, mercy now reigns.
Let me never treat this cup lightly.
It is Your love in liquid form.
Let me drink deeply—and live freely.
