Have you ever had someone look you in the eye and say: “You’re wrong”?
Most of us hate those words. They sting our pride. But sometimes they save our lives.
A good doctor doesn’t say, “That’s one interpretation” when you have cancer. He says: “You’re sick. You need help.”
Jesus ends his debate with the Sadducees with the same unsparing honesty.
? HISTORICAL CONTEXT
In Mark 12, the Sadducees—wealthy, powerful priests who denied the resurrection (Acts 23:8)—try to trap Jesus with a clever question about marriage in the afterlife.
They accepted only the Torah (the Law of Moses) as Scripture and rejected the prophets and writings. Jesus engages them on their terms—quoting Exodus 3:6—but ends with a solemn rebuke:
“You are quite wrong.” (Mark 12:27b)
The Greek word is planan—“to wander off track.” Their error wasn’t minor. It was deadly.
? EXPOSITION
Jesus doesn’t soften the truth.
He doesn’t say, “Well, that’s one interpretation.”
He says: You’re wrong.
Why? Because eternity is at stake.

“Jesus didn’t shy from saying ‘you’re wrong’—because eternity is at stake. Love demands the truth.”

“Better to hear ‘You are wrong’ from Christ now than to hear ‘Depart from me’ on the last day.”
Their fundamental error was twofold (v. 24):
- They didn’t know the Scriptures.
- They didn’t know the power of God.
And their belief was incompatible with the truth of God. Jesus exposed it, not to win an argument, but to save them.
The ultimate answer to their denial of resurrection wasn’t only His exegesis or authority (which they rejected) but His own resurrection:
“He is not here. He is risen!” (Mark 16:6)
“I am the resurrection and the life…” (John 11:25)
Jesus doesn’t just announce resurrection. He is the resurrection.

Jesus’ warning isn’t just for ancient skeptics. It’s for us.

✅ Will you submit your ideas to His authority?
✅ Don’t wait until it’s too late to change your mind.
Church, we can go to services, sing songs, even know Bible trivia—and still be wrong about what matters most if we don’t know Scripture or trust God’s power.
Adjust Your Beliefs:
- Commit to knowing Scripture deeply.
- Trust God’s power to save and transform.
- Expect a resurrection life beyond imagination.
Adjust Your Behaviors:
- Live in light of eternity.
- Value Christ above every earthly gift.
- Proclaim this hope to a world that thinks it’s foolish.
