? A Forgotten Codebook
During World War II, Allied soldiers depended on complex codebooks to send secure messages. Imagine a commander ignoring the codebook because he thought he “knew enough.” Disastrous. Orders would be misunderstood. Lives lost. Victory delayed.
Jesus confronts just that kind of arrogant negligence in Mark 12:24:
“Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God?”
? Historical Context
Jesus is answering the Sadducees, Israel’s wealthy, priestly elite. They prided themselves on “orthodox” belief in the Torah (Genesis–Deuteronomy), yet denied resurrection because they thought it wasn’t taught there.
Jesus exposes the fatal flaw in their “expertise”: they didn’t really know the Scriptures. Worse, they didn’t believe in the power of the God who wrote them. They were spiritual professionals who forgot the point of their profession.
John Chrysostom put it sharply:
“Ignorance of Scripture is the root of all heresies.”
They thought they had mastery over God’s Word. In truth, it had no mastery over them.
2️⃣ THE CRITICAL CORRECTION
Jesus doesn’t soften the blow. He says you are wrong because you don’t know the Scriptures and you don’t know the power of God.
✅ Two roots of error:
- Ignorance of Scripture.
- Unbelief in God’s power.
Hosea 4:6 – “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”
RC Sproul warned:
“The single greatest problem in the church today is that people do not know the Word of God.”
John Piper echoed:
“We err when we do not know the Scriptures—so Jesus calls us to dig into them and find God’s promises, or we will perish in our ignorance.”
These Sadducees are not alone. We’re often the same:
- We own Bibles but don’t open them.
- We debate verses but don’t obey them.
- We want God’s blessings but don’t trust His power.
✅ Personal Application
Ask yourself:
- Am I actually reading the Bible—or just assuming I know it?
- Do I limit God to what I can imagine?
- When temptation strikes, do I have Scripture hidden in my heart (Psalm 119:11)?
Imagine standing unarmed on a spiritual battlefield:
“You know why some of us are so unsuccessful against temptation? We’ve got nothing in the hard drive to pull up. No bullets in the gun. We’re at the mercy of Satan and sinful desires.”
We must cherish Scripture, not challenge it. As Puritan Thomas Watson said:
“Leave not off reading the Bible till you find your hearts warmed.”
You will never know the power of God until you know the Word of God. And the Word of God comes alive only when you trust His power to change you.
Paul reminds us:
1 Corinthians 2:9 – “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.”
Don’t limit God to your imagination. Let Jesus’ words humble you and drive you to Scripture—and into His presence.

Lord Jesus,
Forgive us for our ignorance and arrogance. For the times we’ve owned Bibles but left them closed. For the times we’ve talked about Your power but didn’t believe You would act. Humble us. Drive us into Your Word. Fill us with Your Spirit. Give us childlike wonder at Your promises and radical faith in Your unstoppable power. May Your Word be alive in us, guarding us from sin and shaping us into Your image.
