? Devotion 1: “Well Words” – The Blessing of Identity

Theme: Speak Blessing – Identity through Words
Text: Matthew 3:16–17

Years ago, a teenage boy sat in my office and said, “I know my dad loves me…but I don’t think he likes me.” He said it with a shrug, but his eyes gave him away—eyes still hoping to hear something better. You never outgrow the ache for a father’s blessing.

Historical Context:
At Jesus’ baptism, He hadn’t yet performed a miracle, preached a sermon, or resisted Satan. Still, the heavens opened and the Father said: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matt. 3:17). This moment echoed the ancient Jewish pattern of blessing—words spoken over a child that conveyed identity, affection, and purpose. The word used here—eulogéō—literally means “to speak well of.”

Reflection:
In a culture hungry for affirmation, Jesus received three powerful truths from His Father:

  • “My Son” – belonging and identity
  • “Beloved” – deep, unshakable love
  • “Well pleased” – full approval

This blessing wasn’t earned—it was declared. If Jesus needed to hear this, how much more do our children, our friends, our spouses?

Cross References:

  • Genesis 27:26–29 – Isaac blesses Jacob with spoken favor.
  • Numbers 6:24–26 – God commands Aaron to bless Israel.
  • Proverbs 18:21 – “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

Quote:

“A father’s blessing speaks God’s own voice over his child.” – Augustine
“None can bestow worth like those who speak with God’s authority.” – Charles Spurgeon

Takeaway Task:
Tonight, speak identity over someone. Lay your hand on your child, or call a friend and say, “You are God’s beloved.” Don’t just assume they know it—say it out loud. Your voice may be the channel of heaven’s affirmation today.
