? The Danger of Editing the Rules
Have you ever played a board game with kids who “change the rules” as they go? One minute, a 3 gets you out of jail. The next minute, you need a 6. Why? Because they said so. It’s chaos—and the game stops being fun real fast.
Now imagine living your entire life like that—changing God’s rules to fit your comfort. That’s what Israel had done in Malachi’s day. They edited the Law. And then didn’t even keep the version they edited.
?️ Historical Context
Malachi 4:4 is the hinge between Old and New Testaments. God says:
“Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.”
This isn’t just nostalgia—it’s a call to covenant faithfulness. Horeb (Mount Sinai) wasn’t a suggestion box. It was where God revealed Himself in fire and thunder and gave His Law as a holy boundary between life and death (Deut. 30:19).
In Moses’ day, there were two ways to live:
- Under blessing or under curse (Deut. 28)
In Malachi’s day, the same choice remained.
In Jesus’ day, He said:
“Everyone who hears these words of mine and does them is like a wise man… but everyone who hears and does not do them…” (Matt. 7:24–27).
And today? The same line remains: Follow God’s Word or rewrite it at your own peril.
