Devotion – Despised Yet Delivered
Mark 13:13 – “You will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.”
When Everyone Turns Against You
Think about the loneliest moment you’ve ever felt — maybe in a classroom, a workplace, or even at a family gathering — when you realized everyone in the room was against you. That’s the image Jesus gives His disciples: not mild dislike, but total hatred. “You will be hated by all for my name’s sake.”
But then He gives a promise: “The one who endures to the end will be saved.” He gives both the furnace and the lifeline.
Historical Context – Hated in Their Day, Saved in Their Day
This wasn’t distant speculation. It happened exactly as He said.
- Jewish Hostility grew against the church in the years after Pentecost: Stephen stoned (Acts 7), James executed (Acts 12), Paul beaten repeatedly (2 Cor. 11:24).
- Roman Hatred intensified under Nero after the Great Fire in AD 64. Tacitus writes: “They were torn by dogs, nailed to crosses, burned to serve as lamps by night.” (Annals 15.44).
- Christians became society’s scapegoats, despised by Jews and Gentiles alike.
And yet — those who clung to Christ endured. History records that when the Roman armies first surrounded Jerusalem in AD 66, then mysteriously withdrew, Christians remembered Jesus’ warning (Luke 21:20–21). They fled to Pella in Perea. As Eusebius writes: “The people of the church in Jerusalem… were commanded by a revelation to leave the city and to dwell in Pella.” Obedience saved their lives.
Theological Insight – Endurance Is the Mark of Faith
- James White: “Perseverance is the mark of true faith. It’s not enough to start the race. You must finish.”
- John Owen: “True grace is not a blaze of affection, but a fixed, abiding principle, which will hold out against all opposition.”
- Watchman Nee: “Our spiritual power is often born in the very place where our flesh is broken.”
- Martyn Lloyd-Jones: “Christian people are generally at their best when they are in the furnace of affliction and being persecuted and tried.”
Jesus wasn’t sugarcoating. He was teaching His disciples that salvation is proven by endurance, not enthusiasm.

Application – So What?
If Jesus’ words came true for them, they will hold true for us.
- Expect Hostility – Don’t be shocked when the world mocks your faith. (John 15:18–19)
- Trust the Spirit – The same Spirit who gave boldness to Peter and Paul will give you words and courage.
- Hold the Line – Endurance isn’t bravado; it’s quiet obedience. Sometimes endurance means fleeing, sometimes standing, but always trusting Christ.
- Bless, Don’t Retaliate – Romans 12:14: “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”

Closing Word
Every stone of Jerusalem fell in AD 70, but not one word of Jesus failed. His disciples were hated by all, yet they were saved by One.
Friend, maybe you feel the weight of rejection, ridicule, or fatigue. Endure. Trust His Word. Repent where faith has grown cold. Christ is worth it.
As Athanasius said: “He became what we are, that He might make us what He is.”
Despised by all — yet delivered by Christ.
