? Devotion 3: “No Longer Slaves”

Romans 6:6–7 – “We know that our old self was crucified with him… so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin.”

? Historical Context

In Roman times, slavery was a deeply entrenched reality. Paul uses it here—not to endorse it—but to explain a spiritual truth: sin was once your master, but the cross severed the chain.

? Cut the Cord

A missionary told of a tribe where new believers burned their old fetishes and charms after coming to Christ. When asked why, one elder said, “Dead men don’t wear chains.”

? Christ Didn’t Just Die for You—You Died with Him

The cross wasn’t just substitution—it was participation. Your slavery to sin ended when you died with Jesus.

“The cross not only secures our pardon, it breaks our bondage.” — John MacArthur

“We are not merely pardoned criminals, but liberated slaves.” — Martin Lloyd-Jones

? Cross-References

  • John 8:36 – “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
  • Galatians 5:1 – “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free…”

? Personal Application

You are not obligated to obey sin. The shackles have been shattered.

  • What “master” keeps calling your name?
  • Are you feeding your freedom or your former chains?

? Prayer

Father, thank You that I am no longer a slave. When sin tries to claim me, remind me of the cross. Help me live as a free child, not a chained captive. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
