A Rotten Surprise
There’s nothing worse than getting home from the store, slicing open a watermelon that looked perfect… only to find it’s sandy, dry, and flavorless.
It looked the part.
It felt like summer.
But it wasn’t real.
That’s not just a grocery gripe—that’s a gospel warning.
Jesus once walked up to a tree that promised fruit with its flashy leaves… but delivered nothing. And what He did next was shocking. He didn’t shrug it off. He cursed it. Why? Because it was a living picture of people who look spiritual but have no real fruit. The leafy, fruitless tree became a parable of judgment for anyone playing church but missing Christ.
Context – What’s Going On in Mark 11?
This moment happens just after the triumphal entry—when the crowds shouted “Hosanna!” but didn’t understand what kind of King had come. Now, on the way to the Temple, Jesus sees a fig tree in full leaf (which in that climate should mean it had early fruit). But it didn’t.
So He gives His disciples (and us) a live-action parable: Fruitless faith is useless faith.
And He doesn’t whisper it—He curses the tree.
? Desire — v. 12
“He was hungry.”
The hunger of Jesus reminds us that He is truly God and truly man.
But His physical hunger here hints at something deeper: a spiritual hunger to see His people bear fruit.
Hebrews 4:15 reminds us that He sympathizes with our weakness. But He also longs for growth.
Gregory the Great once wrote,
“Every saint is the Lord’s tree… He seeks not leaves only, but fruit also.”
? Application:
Ask yourself: What does Jesus find in your life? Just leafy church attendance? Or love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, self-control?

?Disappointment — v. 13
“He found nothing but leaves.”
This wasn’t just about a hungry afternoon—it was a heartbreak.
The tree looked alive.
But it was a lie.
John Chrysostom nailed it:
“The fig tree was punished, not for being barren, but for deceiving by its leaves the expectation of fruit.”
Jesus is never fooled by appearance.
Neither should we be.
Thomas Watson put it plainly:
“Faith is the root, obedience the fruit; and if the fruit be not brought forth, it is a sign the root is not living.”
? Application:
Are you serving, loving, praying, giving, and witnessing?
Or just looking like someone who does?
⚠️ Point 3: Denouncement — v. 14
“May no one ever eat fruit from you again.”
This curse isn’t petty—it’s prophetic.
Jesus is using the tree as a symbol of Israel… and of every soul with hollow religion.
Like 2 Timothy 3:5 says:
“Having a form of godliness but denying its power.”
J.C. Ryle put it bluntly:
“Religion that is all leaves and no fruit is but a lie in leaves.”
? HEAD:
God doesn’t just inspect your appearance—He inspects your fruit.
What shows that Christ lives in you?

Ask: “Do I look like a disciple… or live like one?”
Examine not just your beliefs, but your behavior.
✋ HAND:
Do something today that bears fruit:
- Speak kindness to the unkind.
- Forgive before it’s asked.
- Serve when no one sees.
- Share Jesus boldly, even if your voice shakes.

“Let your faith be fruitful and your life useful; otherwise, you stand under the curse of hypocrisy.”
Closing Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You search not just what I say, but what I show. Let my life bear fruit worthy of repentance and love. I don’t want to be a tree full of leaves and empty of life. Fill me with Your Spirit, prune what is dead, and make me fruitful for Your glory. Amen.
