Devotion 2 – How Do Your Expectations Shape Your Faith?

Mark 11:10 – “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”

Have you ever opened a gift expecting one thing and gotten something else entirely? Maybe socks instead of a new gadget? Disappointment stems from misplaced expectation—even with God.

? Head:

The crowds cried, “Blessed is the kingdom of our father David!” They expected a throne, not a cross. But Jesus had told them repeatedly: He came to suffer (Mark 8:31, 9:31, 10:33–34). Their expectations filtered their interpretation of Scripture—they overlooked Isaiah 53 because they wanted Psalm 2.

Theological Reflection:
Calvin observed:

“The human heart is a perpetual idol factory.”
Even in worship, we can fashion God in our own image, expecting Him to fulfill our plans, not transform our hearts.

Historical Note:
First-century Jews longed for a reestablished Davidic kingdom—a national restoration. They missed the global and spiritual scope of Jesus’ mission (cf. Isaiah 49:6).

❤️ Heart:

When God doesn’t meet our expectations, we question His love. But what if His “no” is actually His deepest “yes”? What if the cross-shaped kingdom is better than the crown-shaped one?

Jesus refused to conform to the crowd’s expectations because He came to conquer sin, not Caesar.

✋ Hand:

Ask yourself today:

  • Do I expect Jesus to fulfill my will or help me surrender to His?
  • Where have I been disappointed with God—and was it because of my assumptions?

Takeaway Action:
Write down three expectations you have of Jesus right now—then write a prayer releasing those to His will. Reflect on Proverbs 3:5–6 and meditate on what it means to trust, not lean on your understanding.

Prayer:
Jesus, strip away my false expectations. Help me surrender not just my needs—but my assumptions. I want Your kingdom, not mine.
