Selah:
Life often feels unfair. We see injustice around us, and sometimes we wonder if God sees it too. The Israelites in Malachi’s time questioned God’s justice, asking, “Where is the God of justice?” (Mal. 2:17). But God answered—promising judgment, purification, and the coming of His messenger. This study will help us understand God’s justice, His refining work in our lives, and His unchanging faithfulness.
Part 1: Questioning God’s Justice (Malachi 2:17)
“You have wearied the Lord with your words. But you say, ‘How have we wearied him?’ By saying, ‘Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and he delights in them.’ Or by asking, ‘Where is the God of justice?’”
Discussion Questions:
- What does it mean to “weary” the Lord with our words?
- In what ways do people today question God’s justice, similar to the Israelites in Malachi’s time?
- Have you ever felt like God was not responding to injustice? How did you deal with those feelings?
- What are some ‘Evils’ that we are tempted to call ‘good’ in our culture today?
- How often are we quiet on cultural evil due to fear of reprisal or people’s opinion of us?
Application:
- Reflect on a time when you questioned God’s justice. How did He reveal Himself to you?
- Read Psalm 73, where Asaph struggles with a similar question. How does his perspective change?
- Ask God to fill you with courage to speak the truth in love and to call out sin in your own life and in our culture.
Part 2: The Promise of the Messenger (Malachi 3:1)
“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.”
Discussion Questions:
- How does this prophecy point to both John the Baptist (Matthew 11:10) and Jesus Christ?
- Why is Jesus called the “messenger of the covenant”? What covenant is He fulfilling?
Application:
- Meditate on Mark 1:1–8. How does John the Baptist prepare the way for Jesus?
- If Jesus is the ultimate messenger of the covenant, how should this affect your daily relationship with Him?
Part 3: Refining Fire and Purification (Malachi 3:2-3)
“But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the Lord.”
Discussion Questions:
- What does it mean that Jesus purifies like a refiner’s fire and fullers’ soap?
- In what areas of your life do you think God might be refining or purifying you?
- How can trials and challenges help us grow spiritually instead of turning us away from God?
Application:
- Journal about a recent difficulty. How might God be using it to refine your faith?
- Pray and ask God to show you any impurities in your heart that need refining.
