God Hates Divorce, Not the Divorced

Scripture

“For I hate divorce,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “and the one who covers his garment with violence,” says the Lord of Armies. “So be on your guard and do not be unfaithful.” — Malachi 2:16 (NASB)

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

Think About it…

Divorce is painful. No one walks down the aisle expecting their marriage to end. And yet, in a fallen world, brokenness finds its way into even the most sacred relationships. If you’ve been through a divorce, you may have heard Malachi 2:16 and felt the weight of God’s words: “I hate divorce.”

But hear this clearly—God hates divorce, not the divorced.

Why does God hate divorce? Because it brings pain. It shatters families, wounds hearts, and leaves lasting scars. He knows the hurt it causes because He designed marriage to be a reflection of His unbreakable covenant love. But while He hates divorce, His heart overflows with love and grace for those who have experienced it.

If you’ve walked this road, you are not a second-class Christian. You are not outside of God’s grace. He is near to the brokenhearted. He sees your tears, your regrets, and your longing for healing. And He invites you to draw close, to let Him restore and redeem your story.

So what now? Whether you’re healing from a divorce, struggling with shame, or wondering what’s next, know that your journey isn’t over. God still has a purpose for you. His love is unchanging, and His mercy is new every morning.

So What?

  1. Do you believe that God still loves and values you, even after divorce? If not, what is keeping you from embracing that truth?
  2. In what ways do you need healing from past hurts? Have you surrendered those wounds to God?
  3. How can you guard your heart and spirit moving forward, whether in singleness or in a new relationship?

Take Action

  • Rest in God’s Presence – Spend time in Psalm 34, reflecting on God’s nearness to the brokenhearted. Let His Word speak comfort over your pain.
  • Release Shame – If you are carrying guilt or regret, take it to God in prayer. He is a God of grace, and He offers full forgiveness and restoration.
  • Seek Wise Counsel – Surround yourself with godly mentors, a trusted pastor, or a Christian counselor who can walk with you in your healing.
  • Commit to Spiritual Growth – Whether single or remarried, pursue a deeper relationship with Christ. A strong foundation in Him is essential for any future relationships.
  • Extend Grace to Others – If you know someone struggling with divorce, be a voice of encouragement. Share God’s love and truth with them.

God’s story for you is not finished. His love is steadfast, His grace is sufficient, and His arms are open. No matter your past, He is calling you forward. You are deeply loved.
