Devotional: Honoring God with Our Best

Scripture: — Malachi 2:3-4

“Cursed be the man who dies but the evil done by him survives.”

In Malachi 2:3-4, we see a sobering warning from God. The priests of Israel had dishonored Him by bringing their worst offerings—their last, least, and leftovers—to Him. God, in His holiness, cannot tolerate such disrespect. The graphic image of offal (the refuse from sacrifices) being smeared on their faces symbolizes the degradation they would face for their failure to honor Him.

This isn’t just about physical offerings; it’s about the attitude of the heart. God deserves our best, not what’s leftover after we’ve taken care of everything else in our lives. Our sacrifice to God should reflect the reverence we have for Him, as a response to His covenant faithfulness and love.

Key Takeaways:

  1. God is serious about honor: Malachi highlights that God made a covenant with the descendants of Levi and He is committed to it. This is a reminder that God keeps His promises no matter what, and He deserves our full devotion. Just as He upheld His promise to Levi, He has made promises to us that are just as firm and sure.
  2. Jesus bore the ultimate reproach for us: In Christ, we see the fulfillment of the sacrificial system. Jesus was forsaken and rejected outside the camp, bearing our sin and the consequences we deserved. He gave His best for us so that we could be reconciled with God. How, then, can we bring anything less than our best to Him?
  3. We must bring our best to God: The message for us today is clear—God is not pleased with a lack of effort in our worship and obedience. When we offer our time, talents, and treasures, we must do so with excellence and honor. Our worship, our decisions, our daily lives should reflect our gratitude and reverence for the God who has given us everything.

Application:

  • Examine your heart: Are there areas in your life where you are offering God “leftovers”—whether it’s in your time, your resources, or your obedience? Are you giving Him your best, or the minimum effort?
  • Honor God with excellence: Whether it’s your work, relationships, or service to others, commit to giving your best to God. He deserves the first and the best of all that you have.
  • Be inspired by Christ’s sacrifice: Let the reality that Jesus was rejected in your place motivate you to reject sin and live with integrity. His sacrifice should not be used as an excuse to sin but as the reason to pursue holiness.

Prayer:

Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve offered You my leftovers, whether in my time, my effort, or my worship. Help me to honor You with my best, remembering the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus. Thank You for Your covenant faithfulness, and may I live my life in a way that reflects Your greatness and glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Remember: God’s glory is our gain. When we honor God with our best, we experience His presence, His peace, and His blessing. Let’s commit to offering Him everything we have, and giving Him the glory He deserves.
